A crawl space that made curbless easy
A 1954 bungalow on a raised wood floor. Instead of a concrete saw, half a day of joist work gave us the recess we needed.

01Before and after
The room, either side of the work
- Original 1954 cast-iron tub, still sound, but a 17 in rim.
- Pine sub-floor with two soft spots beside the toilet flange.
- 26.5 in clear door off a narrow hallway.
- Single 60 W ceiling fixture and no exhaust fan at all.
- Sub-floor dropped 1.5 in inside the shower footprint between sistered 2x10 joists.
- Cast iron cut in place and removed in four pieces rather than dragged down the hall.
- Rotten sub-floor and one joist end replaced, within the quoted allowance.
- Pocket door fitted where the hallway wall turned out to be non-load-bearing, giving the full 32 in leaf.
- 110 CFM humidity-sensing exhaust ducted through the gable, not into the attic.
- Heated floor cable in the uncoupling mat, on its own thermostat and GFCI.
