01Overview
What this actually involves
ANSI A137.1 sets 0.42 as the minimum wet dynamic coefficient of friction for level interior tile expected to be walked on wet. That is a floor, not a ceiling. Our default shower floor measures 0.62, and we will not install polished porcelain in a bathroom at any price.
Tile size does as much work as the surface texture. A 2 in mosaic puts a grout joint under the ball of your foot every two inches, and those joints are what your foot actually grips when a surface is wet and soapy. A 24 in plank with a joint every two feet gives you nothing to catch on, however textured the face is.
The last piece is contrast. A pale floor against a pale wall gives a low-vision eye no edge to read, and the edge is the thing people trip on. We aim for at least 30 points of tone difference between floor and wall, and we mark the curbless transition with a colour-matched but visibly distinct grout joint.
